Electricity systems are transforming rapidly, and we have a unique opportunity to lay the groundwork for a low cost, low carbon, reliable grid.
You’ll be joining a fast-growing, venture-backed, mission-driven startup, working closely with our CEO Karl to shape the policy and regulatory environment required to fully unlock distributed flexibility.
At Axle, we’re building the infrastructure that’ll underpin the decarbonised energy system. Our software crushes CO2 and energy costs. Our goal is insanely ambitious, and we’re building a team to match the scale of this challenge. We’ve just raised a Seed round from world-leading investors including Accel (TechCrunch) and we’re growing fast.
We make the technology to move energy usage to times when electricity is cheap and green. Our software controls vehicle charging, heating systems, and home batteries. We use machine learning to figure out what energy people will need, and when they'll need it. We control hundreds of thousands of energy assets, and we’re growing quickly.
Axle is a unique startup. We’re building in a legacy industry and moving gigawatt-hours of electrons in the real world, but we operate at lightning speed. We ship extraordinarily quickly, and we’re experts in electricity systems. We’re backed by some of the best investors in the world, and we’re growing the team to meet customer demand.

We’re looking for someone to lead our activities in the policy and regulatory space.
Electricity systems are heavily regulated, and most of that regulation was written for the past, for a world of large fossil fuel power plants and slow, predictable load growth.
We believe electricity systems need to change to deliver low cost, low carbon, reliable grids, and that change will require major updates in policy and regulation.
This role will identify policy & regulatory barriers and opportunities in the UK and globally, determine the highest-leverage changes needed to turbocharge distributed flexibility, and lead the charge to make that change a reality.
We’re not expecting to rewrite the rules of global energy systems overnight. Instead, we’ll be hyper focused, narrowing all of our energy, pull, and experience on the most critical opportunities.
Example focus areas:
- Driving forward a change to the UK’s Balancing and Settlement Code to enable all consumer-led devices to participate in flexibility markets
- Pushing forward our POV on how flex providers should be licensed and regulated
- Understand the regulatory landscape in new geographies, and define our point of entry
This is a high-velocity, high-impact role. To succeed, you’ll need to learn quickly and absorb & process highly technical information. You’ll need to be well-versed in energy systems, be comfortable speaking for Axle to policymakers and regulators, and have a ‘run through walls’ attitude.
You’ll need:
- the courage to challenge the status quo
- a commitment to deliver actions, not words
- a comfort getting deep (really, really deep) into critical topics
- strong written and verbal communication skills
- knowledge of electricity systems, ideally from multiple perspectives
- a track record of delivering change in a relevant field
Interview process
- Initial interview
- Take-home exercise
- Final interview (in-person)
- Offer, references, and welcome to the team!
We love the idea of fully remote work but it doesn't… work. For very early stage companies, people learn faster, get on better, and accomplish more when they're spending a decent chunk of time together. We ask that you spend 2-3 days a week in our London office.
We are extremely keen to build a diverse company, and we’re particularly eager to hear from candidates who don't fit the traditional role stereotypes. If you’re motivated by our mission, please do reach out, even if you feel you might not ‘check all the boxes’.
